About Counselling / Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy/Counselling involves talking with someone who can help you develop insight and understanding into your problems.
Sometimes we find it difficult to make sense of our lives; we may not be entirely happy with or understand why we behave or react the way we do but we feel unable to change. Sometimes we may feel overwhelmed by our feelings, life events or struggle to sustain relationships. Deciding to see a therapist can be an important step into helping you to make changes and move forward in your life.
What conditions can it help?
Psychotherapy/Counselling can help with emotional, personal or relationship problems. These include:
Stress
Anxiety
Depression
Lack of confidence
Self damaging behaviour
Bereavement and other losses
Issues relating to abuse or unhappiness in childhood
Domestic violence
What benefits can be expected?
Despite the name, the role of a counsellor isn't about giving advice or telling you what to do. Instead counselling/psychotherapy is about creating a safe, reflective space where you can explore the difficulties that have arisen in your life. By building a relationship based on non-judgement, empathy, trust and respect with a therapist it becomes possible to understand how and where your difficulties have arisen. This could be done for example, by highlighting how past experiences may still be affecting you.
Psychotherapy helps to deal with emotional distress, however psychotherapy can also be used proactively. The space can be used as a general exercise in self-development by using it better undersdtand the way you are or your motivations before making life changing decisions.
Whatever your reason is for seeking counselling/psychotherapy, the insight and the awareness gained will in itself give you more choice in the way you live your life.
